For many people, the start of the new year brings with it all sorts of new year’s resolutions, and one of those  for you, might be that it’s finally time to start a family. As an Acupuncturist that works with Fertility and Women’s Health, I have used Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine to help many couples achieve that dream. I wanted to share a few fertility tips and strategies that you can use to help give you the best chance of conceiving easily and healthily.

So many women come to me after they have been trying for a while, with the same statement. “You spend your whole life to avoid getting pregnant, and then when you finally want to, it’s much more difficult than you thought”

So, first of all, it’s important to be in the best of health. Clean up that diet, take those multivitamins, keep the alcohol and caffeine intake low, and if you smoke, it’s really important to stop. Smoking causes Oxidative stress and cell damage and can decrease egg and sperm health. We are trying to make sure the two ingredients we have, egg and sperm are the best possible.

Some people get pregnant the first month they try, but most don’t. The average couple has a 20% chance of conceiving each month, so trying for a few months is perfectly normal. To maximise those months chance of success though, I advise couples to have a very specific strategy. The average lifespan of sperm is 3 – 5 days. The average cycle menstrual is 28 days, so, if you start on day 8, and have intercourse every second day for 10 days, the woman will have live sperm in her system throughout the entire phase that she could ovulate. This is often a game changer for couples, and takes a little of the stress out of needing to know exactly when the woman is ovulating. That being said. It’s really important to figure out – are you ovulating? There are a number of ways to do this, including, Ovulation Predictor Kits, BBT (Temperature) Charting and Cervical Fluid observation. I often use temperature charting as a really useful tool to help women understand their fertility cycles. It is a simple, cheap and effective way to monitor when you ovulate and it can also help us identify if there are other issues with your cycle that may be making it more difficult to achieve a pregnancy.

You might also want to get Hormonal tests or Sperm tests done. The normal recommendation is to have these done after 6 months of trying to conceive if you are over 35 or after a year of unsuccessful trying if you are under 35. There are many things that can be done to help maximise your chance of a pregnancy, and there are numerous studies which have shown that Acupuncture can be beneficial in both Natural Conception and IVF.
